The way people determine what is good and what is wrong is whether something lines up with their rational self interest. No matter what you do you gain something, even if it is a small thing like a warm fuzzy feeling.

Hey, now you have raised an epistemological question. What about Altruistic acts? Are you saying that people who run into a burning building are doing it for the possiblility of a future glory in the press, etc? This is ultimately unknowable since we must rely upon the testimony of the potentially altruistic person to determine the outcome....

I think that's what he wa reffering to when he said it might only be "a small thing like a warm fuzzy feeling" If other people's lives are more importent to you than your own, the reward for running into a burning building is greater than the reward for protecting your own skin.
