Is there such a thing as a just war?

Maybe, maybe not but all war is corrupted on one level or another. I think the closest thing to a just war was to help liberate europe and stop the extermination of the jews in WWII

We should define war before this explodes.

war is defined as big armies clashing together in fight for supremacy over various regions or natural resources.

There are many in the US then that would not consider the Iraq War a "war" based on your definition. Remember we are officially there to "help."

Would you say then that Iraq is another "Vietnam"? I don't think it would be outragious at this point to say the two are surely simalar.

The difference between vietnam and Iraq is that vietnam had an army and china's support. Iraq just has a bunch of people randomly blowing themselves up at this point.

Iraq is equally senseless, but not equally deadly. The hawks point out that we could have taken over the entire country in 6 month if we would have fought to win - the doves say we should have never gone at all. In any event, the Bush administrations policy runs way behind the will of the public on this one. As probably the OLDEST poster on the topic, this facet of the conflict does remind me of Vietnam. For over four years Nixon told us "its almost done, its almost done, its almost done - peace with honor...." That's four years for a war that lasted 9. Now Bush sometimes says "were almost done" and sometimes says "we will be there indefinitely" Which is it? But the measure should be - "What is REALLY going on?" "Who benefits?" It's called good journalism! Sorry for the rant - need to let off stream. Go ahead Jon - let me have it!

I agree with that as far as the Iraq and Vietnam. Personally I want to know what the real reason we are in Iraq. Personally i believe we are there for oil and to have a good key point for a possible war against China whether defensive or offensive. If Bush had just come out and said it im sure he would catch a little less flak for this war.

Yes, but what are the after effects of such a push? Traditionally this country has tried to build the image of the avenger. And the very definition of an avenger is someone who takes action not for petty selfish reasons, but for justice. What justice is there in this? And how will turning the entire Arab world against us- obtain that?

Maybe they are just idiots. This is another option. Maybe they (the current admin) just doesn't have any idea what they are doing. They are totally incompetent.

Anyway, war is necessary, it has always been here and alway will be. As long as we have human beings on this Earth or elsewhere we will always have wars.

I agree. It is to much apart of our nature. I would like to believe we can live peacefully together but unless aliens invade us I think we will be in constant struggle for some reason or another. Whether it be oil, territory, or (in the distant future) planets and their resources.

Back to the original topic posted, do you think perhaps a defensive war would be just? A war only waged when invasion and slavery is the only other option?
I think that sounds fairly just. Of course it's forever and a day since any of our ancestors has ever had to wage a war on these grounds. However, that certainly doesn't suggest it's never happened.

Does the revolutionary war count as a just war? A war for self governance and to throw off the shackles of religious and political persecution.

The problem with that reasoning is that some of the former British empire became free without a bloody revolution. Canada and Australia are noteable examples.

No, war is not just. Because everyone has a different opinnion on what is just to them. It is like the crusades...somebody's god is always on their side and we are killing in his name.
